the COVE

The Cove is a documentary film that describes the annual killing of dolphins in a National Park at Taji, Wakayama in Japan. The film highlights that the number of dolphins killed in the Taiji dolphin hunt is several times greater than the number of whales killed in the Antarctic, and claims that 23,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed in Japan every year. I have watched several clips from this documentary and literally had to turn away. It made my stomach sick to see men slaughtering these intelligent, beautiful creatures. Fisher Stevens is so brave and I am so thankful that someone like him is willing to risk their lives to bring attention to this atrocity. The dolphin slaughter will begin again on Sept 1st, 2010 and I pray that this film will somehow cause Japanese people to rethink this horrible practice.  It's all about education, they need to know that they are not just slaughtering "fish".  Dolphins are amazing animals capable of self recognition and decision making. Dolphins have been declared the world’s second most intelligent creatures after humans, with scientists suggesting they are so bright that they should be treated as “non-human persons".  Can you imagine the terror that they feel when they are all herded into this cove for slaughter??
This is an excellent article on dolphin intelligence.
Today is the first day that The Cove is being broadcast online in Japanese. It can be viewed at http://www.takepart.com/.  Please spread the word about this important documentary and make sure you watch it. The trailer can be seen below.
