I am terrified of skin cancer. I obviously don't want any kind of cancer but skin cancer seems like one of those types that you can do a lot to prevent. I try to do all that I can to be healthy and to fight free radicals. One thing that I do everyday is use a broad spectrum sunscreen (Aveeno Positively Ageless SPF 70) on my face. I always use SPF 50 in the sun and wear hats as much as possible. I feel so sad for women who are addicted to tanning and have bought in to the western myth that "brown is better".
I came across some alarming research on tanning beds and wanted to share it here.
-The International Agency for Research on Cancer equated tanning beds to cigarettes, mustard gas and arsenic.
- One burn in a tanning bed is equal to 10-12 severe sunburns
- People who use tanning beds before age 30 increase their lifetime risk of melanoma by 75%
-People who tan indoors are 2.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma
- It is possible to acquire warts and herpes from a tanning bed, not all owners properly clean them
-UVA rays penetrate deep into your skin, causing significant destruction and loss of skin elasticity. (sagggy, wrinkled skin!!)
-In 2009 The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced that it has moved UV tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category -- "carcinogenic to humans."
-The risk of melanoma was increases by 300% for those using tanning beds occasionally and by 800% for those using tanning beds more than 10 times a year.
-A study reported last July by researchers from the National Institutes of Health found that melanoma rates among young women in the United States almost tripled between 1973 and 2004!!
How much more evidence do you need?? Don't fool yourself... tanning beds are deadly

  1. I still can't get over that sign in Fredericton outside of Miami Tanning that says " Life is better with a tan". Yikes! Not so at all!

  2. Fifty years ago women thought "life was better with Virgina Slims" too!
